Minimizing Risk while Getting Clean Gutters
For most homeowners, cleaning gutters means climbing a ladder — and for older adults, that is a serious risk. A study published in the Journal of Surgical Research found that among trauma patients who had fallen from ladders, older adults had significantly higher rates of hospital admission and traumatic brain injury than younger patients.
The physical demands compound the danger: repeated climbing up and down, reaching and leaning overhead, and working at height for extended periods. A separate study of adults aged 65 and older found that 40% overreached during a simulated gutter-clearing task — a behavior directly linked to ladder tip risk.
The financial consequences are severe, too. Emergency department visits and inpatient care for fall injuries in older adults average around $20,000 per incident — far more than the cost of professional gutter cleaning.
